We offer a range of support options to help you take your Car Theory Test in a way that works best for you.
Automated Reader Service
With the Automated Reader, the system reads the questions aloud through the headphones provided at the Test Centre. Watch the video above to see the process.
- The reader is built into the exam
- You control the audio yourself
- Available at all Test Centres
- No need to contact us in advance
When booking your Test, select “English Voiceover” from the voiceover options.
In-Person Reader Service
If the Automated Reader does not meet your needs, you can request an in-person reader.
- Questions are read aloud to you in a separate room
- This is not the same as the automated reader
- No other help can be provided during the exam
- Available in selected Test Centres only
- Appointments can take up to 20 business days to arrange

Dyslexia Support (Self-Service)
You can choose Dyslexia Support when booking your test. Watch the video above to see how it looks in the exam. It includes:
- English voiceover
- An on-screen Lexicon (terms and alternative phrases) beside each question
- A downloadable Lexicon PDF to use before your exam and in the exam tutorial
- Available at all Test Centres
- No need to contact us in advance
When booking your test, select “Dyslexia Support” from the voiceover options.
In-Person Dyslexia Support
If you need dyslexia support but cannot use the self-service option, you can request in-person support.
- Questions are read aloud in a separate room
- Printed Lexicon (terms and alternative phrases)
- No other help can be provided during the exam
- Available in selected Test Centres only
- Appointments can take up to 20 business days to arrange

ISL Video Clips (Self-Service)
You can choose Irish Sign Language (ISL) video clips when booking your test. Watch the video above to see how ISL videos work in the exam.
- ISL videos appear in the exam
- Available at all Test Centres
- No need to contact us in advance
When booking your Test, select “Irish Sign Language Videos Enabled” from the voiceover options.

Translation Voiceover Service
The Driver Theory Test (BW) for Cars, Tractors & Work Vehicles is now available with voiceover in 21 languages. This service is available at all 40 Test Centre Locations.
How to book:
- When booking your Theory Test online please select your chosen language from the voiceover options.
- Your test will display in English with audio in your chosen language.
- If booking by phone please call 0818 606 106
In-Person Translator Service
If your national language is not available in the voiceover options, you can request an in-person translator.
- The translator will translate the questions and answer options only – no additional help can be given.
- This test takes place in a separate room in selected Test Centres.
- You must submit a completed Declaration Form (PDF, 207kb) and Driver Theory Test Request Form.
- Please allow up to 25 business days to arrange an appointment.
